Topic:

This session will cover a wide range of street photography topics, beginning with an introduction to the genre and progressing through intermediate and advanced topics. We will cover everything from how to setup and use your camera, to tips and tricks to make street photography easier and more comfortable, to street photography in quiet and suburban areas, and to overall conceptual issues in street photography, such as telling a story and creating a portfolio or project.

Bio:

James has lived in New York for his entire life. Like many Manhattanites, he is a terrible driver and cook, but he’s an excellent navigator. He has been practicing the art of street photography since he first picked up a camera, has worked as a portrait, studio, and documentary photographer in New York since 2005, is a certified New York photography tour and workshop guide, and is the author of The New York Photographer’s Travel Guide and The Essentials of Street Photography.

Lisa will discuss the love for RUST and their approach to and experience with photographing historic and abandoned buildings, urban decay, etc. This program will include techniques for wide angle and close-up photography including the use of HDR (high dynamic range), EDR (extended dynamic range), HDR-panoramas, and light painting in this program. Equipment and techniques used to bring out the beauty and drama of these subjects will also be discussed as we show our fascination with RUST. The program is aimed to inspire you: inspire you to visit new "old" places and to get to know them well enough to tell their story, inspire you to capture high dynamic range images and to light paint, and inspire you to create art from decay. Tom and Lisa see the Beauty in Decay and Abandonment. Old, Historic, Grand, Dramatic, Unique -- these characteristics draw us to explore and capture the essence of these rusty, dusty subjects and locations. Urban exploration (UrbEx) is the art of finding and exploring abandoned locations. Not all locations are technically "urban" or even "abandoned". The term abandoned is used VERY loosely. It is not "being abandoned" that attracts us to a place, it is the history, beauty, decay, charm, and architectural details (which contrast so drastically with today’s vanilla architecture). Another definition of UrbEx is the investigation of seldom seen man-made structures, a definition more consistent with our quest, since our subjects may be FAR from abandoned (like the architectural grandeur of bustling Grand Central Terminal or the surprising drama of the neo-Gothic Eastern State Penitentiary), but these sites count as "unseen" because few people actually stop to appreciate beautiful prison architecture or the jaw-dropping details of Grand Central, a place that they might even rush through twice a day.

Lisa Cuchara, PhD, Master Craftsman (PPA), Master of Photography (M. Photog.) HonNEC, is very passionate about photography and she enjoys both being behind the lens and in the digital darkroom. She loves to photograph nature but finds many subjects equally intriguing. From birds and flowers to babies and UrbEx/HDR, she appreciates the world around her and embraces the challenge of interpreting what her eyes see and her heart feel via her photographs. Lisa says that photography allows her to pay attention to the details, to be mindful, to slow down and appreciate all of the beauty, details and nuances of everyday life. Lisa met her husband Tom thru photography, and they are both very active in many local, national, and international photography organizations. They have had many successful gallery exhibitions, their work has been accepted into many juried exhibitions and their images have won awards at the local, state, national, and international levels. Their photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life, Wild Bird, Birder’s World, in calendars and on calendar covers, and on the cover of a fictional paperback novel. Lisa has also had images accepted into the PPA (Professional Photographers Association) loan collection and has earned three Bronze image competition cases.

MOLLIE ISAACS has been a professional photographer and experienced teacher for 3 decades. She specializes in nature and macro photography, as well as portraits of children and families. She has studied with Ansel Adams, Joyce Tenneson, and others. She has photographed many famous faces including Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, actress Meryl Streep, actor Gary Busey, former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder, and many other notables and dignitaries. She has won the “Oscar” of photography, the coveted Kodak Gallery Award, 15 times. Her work is in the Permanent Collection of the International Photography Hall of Fame. She enjoys traveling and teaching.

Topic:
In the same land that hosts the beluga whales of summer and polar bears in autumn comes an amazing phenomenon that illumines the dark winter skies. The northern lights—also called the aurora borealis, meaning “north wind of the dawn"—brighten the night in an ethereal display of color. Churchill has some of the most intense auroral activity on Earth, making it an ideal destination for a northern lights tour.

Court’s Bio:
Nature has been a constant in Court’s life. Spending much of his youth outdoors fostering a strong love and appreciation for wildlife led him to attend the University of Florida, where he received his bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees in both Ecotourism and Entomology. As the creator of his own discipline and major, he was able to design his coursework, research and teaching to focus on, as he puts it, “conserving the world through nature and educational travel experiences.” Throughout his graduate school career, Court also ran an ecotourism company through which he planned and led more than 60 expeditions to nature destinations on all seven continents.

Today, Court continues to guide the world’s best nature expeditions with Natural Habitat Adventures and World Wildlife Fund, while also heading up Nat Hab’s sustainability efforts, elevating it to become one of the most sustainable and eco-conscious travel enterprises in the world.

Throughout his travels he has also developed a keen sense for photography and videography. This has led to a true passion and profession, as he now guides many photo expeditions each year to the world’s most iconic areas and ecosystems. Whether it’s an expedition to the arctic for polar bears and northern lights, to Africa for the world’s most charismatic megafauna, or deep into the remote jungles of Borneo, Madagascar, and Papua New Guinea, he cherishes his time teaching and extending his love of conservation photography to anyone eager to learn.

Underwater Imagery from the Salish Sea
(the Salish Sea encompasses Puget Sound and the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca in the Northeast Pacific Ocean)

Don will share underwater images from his collection while highlighting the role that citizen science volunteers are playing in increasing our understanding of the marine environment.

Bio:
Don Gordon is an amateur marine naturalist and scuba diver who has conducted more than one thousand underwater surveys of fish and invertebrates in the Salish Sea over the past ten years. Don is a seasoned cold water divemaster and photographer. Don has spent more than 30 years working for a variety of conservation and environmental organizations.

Topic:
This talk is based on my more than 35 plus years’ experience photographing wildlife and covers the requirements, strategies, techniques, and equipment required to capture engaging animal images. Included is information on lighting and composition, plus locating, attracting, and approaching wildlife. The program is interwoven with some entertaining stories behind some of the images. (The program contains a lot of new material plus images from COVID 19 confinement.)

BIO
For more than 35 years, I have shared my photographic experiences and love of nature with thousands of individuals through more than 300 photo classes, workshops, lectures, and tours in both the U.S. and abroad including Kenya, Iceland, Newfoundland, the Falkland Islands, the Brazilian Pantanal, South Dakota Badlands, Bosque del Apache, Chincoteague NWR, Tangier Island, etc. Program sponsors have included zoos, nature centers, camera clubs, and conservation organizations such as National Wildlife Federation and the Assateague Island Alliance. For many years, I have taught photography classes at Johns Hopkins University and other educational institutions and have written “How To” articles on nature photography for national publications such as Outdoor Photographer and Birding. My images have appeared in magazines, calendars, and books published by National Wildlife Federation, Natural History Society, Audubon, and Sierra Club. Credits include the book, “Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, an Ecological Treasure."

Chris Harris presented his B&W Photojournalism and told his wonderful stories to the CCC in November 2020. His presentation was so well received that we asked him to give us more. Luckily for us he said yes!

Chris Harris was late to join academia.
For over twenty-five years he worked as a freelance photojournalist for major news media worldwide. From his base in New Orleans he photographically documented the news of the world for TIME, Life, Newsweek, the New York Times as well as many other major publications. Professor Harris is well known for his diversity of work. Whether it was the “Sex in New Orleans” coverage for Playboy Magazine, his coverage of Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter for Newsweek, his extended (14 page) essay on bullfighting for Sports Illustrated,Tennessee Williams for People Magazine or Walker Percy for Esquire, Harris has met the needs of publications worldwide. From the late 1960s to the early 1990s he specialized in covering Central America as well as the American South. His work was represented worldwide by GAMMA/Liaison agency in Paris and New York.
Since coming-in from active photojournalism Professor Harris obtained his advanced degree in Journalism from the University of Alabama in order to go into higher education. He is a Professor Emeritus in the College of Mass Communication, Electronic Media Communication Department at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. His specialties included photojournalism, media law and ethics and visual journalism.

In this session we will talk about the Technique, Vision, and Processing of black & white images This class will help you to evaluate what images you might want to select for black and white images, see some simple ways to correct minor distractions in post and give you greater confidence to express yourself in new ways.

We will explore some of the following essential concepts in the creation of black and white images.
1. Discover what goes into a B&W image vs a color image both in terms of capture but also with processing.
2. Examine the various camera settings that improve our opportunity to capture and process more compelling black and white images.
3. Explore the myths common associated with black and white image creation.
4. Examine what kind of scenes make for more compelling images as black and white than color.
5. How we can use depth, texture, luminosity, sharpness, and focus to dramatically improve the interaction with our images.

Nic Stover was raised in the high mountains of Western Colorado on a single magazine subscription to National Geographic and only 5 television channels, where the only shows his family regularly watched were Nature (PBS) and the Tour De France. It was here that his love for adventure, the outdoors, and photography took shape.
Stover is based in San Luis Obispo, California and focuses on landscape photography classes and workshops encouraging his class participants to Develop their skills, Explore their capabilities, and to Create meaningful work.
